What Does It Take to Be a Zumba® Instructor?

Anyone 18 years or older can take the necessary steps to become a Licensed Zumba® Instructor. While being 18 years of age or older is the only requirement to become a Zumba® instructor in Ohio and beyond, several things may help, including:

  • Experience: You don't need to have any special skills or background in dance or fitness to become a Zumba® instructor. But any previous experience is a great asset while working your way through the course and learning the ropes!
  • Excitement: The more excited you are about helping others become the best version of themselves, the more that excitement will translate to your classes and inspire others to continue their dance and fitness journeys.
  • Engagement: Leading a Zumba® class takes a dedicated, positive person ready to engage with dance fitness lovers of all ages and experience levels. You'll need to lead your class through practice and preparation and help each student feel welcomed and encouraged.

How to Get a Zumba® Instructor License in Ohio

To get a Zumba® Instructor License in Ohio, start by enrolling in a Zumba® instructor training. The Zumba instructor training teaches you everything you need to get started with Zumba® instruction in a fun, fast paced setting. Learn the four basic rhythms of Zumba®, including cumbia, reggaeton, salsa and merengue. With these four basic rhythms down, you can learn how to incorporate them into a dance fitness routine.

Once you've successfully completed the training, you will become officially licensed as a Zumba® Instructor. As an independent contractor, you have the freedom to decide when, where and how you conduct your classes, including your payment structure. To enhance your experience, join the Zumba® Instructor Network (ZIN™), where you can connect with other Zumba® leaders and get insider information for making your classes the best they can be.

Where to Take Instructor Courses

You have two options when enrolling in an instructor training course — in person or online. Even if you receive your instructor training online, you can still hold classes in person or in whichever format works best for your teaching style.

In Person Training Courses

In person training courses let you meet other people passionate about Zumba® while learning from a Zumba® Education Specialist. Find and register for a training near you and wait to receive a confirmation email to let you know your next steps. You will get an additional email before your course with all the important details, like where to meet and what to bring.

An in person instructor training provides you with tips and tricks on how to lead your own Zumba® class. It also offers direct support from a professional Zumba® expert who can answer any questions you may have.

Online Training Courses

If you cannot find an in person training close to you or cannot attend the training course, online instructor trainings are a fantastic alternative. The livestream Zumba® training gives participants the opportunity to interact with each other and the instructor via Zoom. The on demand training course provides 16 educational modules that go over the basics of teaching a Zumba® class. You'll complete the 10 hours of content on your own time while you have access to an online instructor to answer any questions.
