Tips for Your First Class

After you get your Zumba® license, these tips will help you get the most out of your first session and be prepared to teach your first class:

  • Use My First Class™: At your training, you'll receive "My First Class™," a full class of music and choreography you can practice immediately. Zumba® has made it easy to build the perfect class with a mix of great music and easy to learn and follow choreographies that are perfect for a new Zumba® Instructor.
  • Practice your set: Even the most experienced instructors can benefit from regular practice. Keep your skills sharp and practice each song before your sessions, so you know exactly what you're going to do when the time comes and you're prepared to help others learn the ropes.
  • Incorporate variety: Incorporate a variety of dance styles, playlists, variations and speeds into your lessons. Help your students find what makes them feel comfortable and excited and build on those activities while adding new ones along the way.
  • Find what sets you apart: As a Zumba® instructor, it's clear you have an interest in dance and fitness — but what else makes you special that can add some unique elements to your classes? Do you have any special skills or outside passions that can help you tell your own unique story through dance instruction and appeal to students of all backgrounds?
  • Create a welcoming environment: All class participants, whether they've taken a Zumba® class 10 times or this is their first class, should feel comfortable and welcomed as soon as they enter. You can accomplish this by greeting all of your participants at the door and engaging with them throughout the class. When others feel comfortable in your class and love participating, they'll share your class with friends and help you increase your following in your area.
