What You Need to Become a Dance Fitness Instructor in Delaware

The first step to becoming a dance fitness instructor is to receive your Zumba® Instructor License. Each facility may then have its own requirements for dance and fitness instructors. A passion for fitness and a desire to help others lead a healthy lifestyle are also useful qualities for someone looking to start a career as a dance fitness instructor.

What Do You Need to Become a Zumba® Instructor?

Anyone 18 years and older can enroll in a Zumba® instructor training — that's the only requirement! No prior experience is required to register, but any background in fitness, dance, health, training or a similar field will give you a great head start. Once you complete an instructor course and receive your official license, you can start leading classes in your chosen location.

As an independent contractor, you get to decide where you work, when you hold classes, your payment structure, the type of songs you use and other aspects of your classes.

How to Get Your Zumba® Instructor License in Delaware

To get started as a Licensed Zumba® Instructor, you will need to finish a Zumba® instructor training. Once you've completed your instructor training, you'll receive your official Zumba® Instructor license. You can then opt to join the Zumba® Instructor Network (ZIN™), where you'll get access to tools to improve your skills and be a part of a supportive Zumba® Instructor community.

Your Zumba® Instructor License is valid for 6 months, however as long as you are a ZIN™ member in good standing, your license will remain active. Regardless of what format you earn your Zumba® Instructor License in, you can choose whichever option works best for you to host classes, whether that's in person, virtual or both.

Zumba® Basic 1 Training

The Zumba® Basic 1 instructor training is a high energy, engaging course designed to give you the strong foundation you need to start teaching and continue refining as you learn new skills. You'll learn the four basic rhythms of Zumba® and their variations, including reggaeton, salsa, cumbia and merengue. As you understand the basic rhythms, you will learn how to incorporate them into a dance routine for an immersive exercise.

Where to Take Zumba® Instructor trainings in Delaware

No matter where you live in Delaware, an instructor training course is never too far! You have two options when enrolling:

In Person Trainings

Find a Zumba® instructor training course near you for interactive learning in a group setting. You'll meet other people in your area with similar interests and have a chance to ask questions and see firsthand what it's like to lead others. Keep an eye on your inbox after registering for your training — you'll get confirmation emails with all the important details and next steps.

In person training courses offer a unique experience working with a Zumba® specialist as you learn the basics and how to create an exciting and engaging dance fitness class. During an in person instructor training, you will learn alongside other students and those with a love of dance and fitness.

Online Trainings

If you cannot find an in person training close to you or cannot attend the training, online instructor trainings are a fantastic alternative. The livestream Zumba®training gives participants the opportunity to interact with each other and the instructor via Zoom. The on demand training course provides 16 educational modules that go over the basics of teaching a Zumba® class. You'll complete the 10 hours of content on your own time while you have access to an online instructor to answer any questions.

All Zumba® training options provide the information and resources you'll need to start your career as a Zumba® instructor.

Work at colleges, resorts, and parks as a Zumba instructor

Where to work as a
Zumba® Instructor

Delaware's largest cities are Wilmington, Dover and Newark, but there are gyms, studios and fitness centers all across the state. The state is also a popular vacation destination, with resorts and beach clubs for waterfront fitness. Other than local gyms, dance studios, health clubs and fitness centers, you can also search at places like:

College Campuses

College campuses often feature fitness centers, gyms and dance studios, which can be excellent places to hold a dance fitness class. Working directly with college students can be rewarding and help you share your passion for dance and leading a fit lifestyle. Many colleges and universities are looking for talented fitness instructors to lead exciting exercise classes and encourage campus activities.

Vacation Resorts

There are many popular vacation resorts throughout Delaware that are looking for unique exercise instructors and activities for guests to enjoy. Leading a Zumba® class at a vacation resort can help you expand your clientele and engage with new people who are looking to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Parks and Outdoor Spaces

Parks and other communal outdoor spaces can be ideal places to hold exercise classes that allow everyone to enjoy the scenery and beautiful weather. Before planning a class outdoors or in a park, it is always important to get permission to use the space for a dance fitness class.

Teaching Online Zumba® Classes From Delaware

Reach a new audience at a time and place convenient to you with online Zumba® classes! Produce prerecorded videos for participants to follow along with on their own time, or host live Zumba® sessions through our virtual network or a third party application. All you need is a recording space free of distractions, recording equipment and a stable internet connection, and you're ready to start!

Because virtual classes don't let you help with hands on instruction, be sure to include plenty of verbal and visual cues. Seek regular feedback from participants about your volume, presentation, connection stability and other important factors so you're always providing the best possible Zumba® class.

Tips for Leading Your First Class

As your first Zumba® class approaches, you might be overwhelmed with excitement — prepare with these tips:

  • Check insurance requirements: A good insurance plan is critical, but don't forget to check with the facility you're working at to see if they have specific liability requirements to consider before your first class.
  • Practice your set: Being a good instructor means you're able to help your students learn dances through demonstrations and form correction. The only way you can do this well is if you've practiced your set and know each song by heart before the big day. Of course, mishaps can happen, but being ready to teach lets your students know you care about the material.
  • Stay up to date: Keep up to date on all things Zumba® by joining the Zumba® Instructor Network (ZIN™), this will give you all the tools and support you need for an amazing first class.
