According to my parents, I danced before I could walk so I've been dancing my entire life. My formal dance training, in West African, Modern, Contemporary, and Hip-Hop dance, began in college. I have been a performing member of numerous groups and two dance companies: the Wesley Williams Dance Ensemble (1993-1997) and the Wesley Williams Urban Dance Theatre (2003-2008).
I hold a Ph.D. from Iowa State University and Bachelor’s and Master’s of Arts degrees from North Carolina Central University. I have been a faculty/staff/administrator at several universities including NC A&T State University, Rutgers University, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the University of Kentucky, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, The University of the Virgin Islands and The University of Houston. I have conducted research and taught classes in sociology, research methods, family studies, human development, multicultural issues, cultural competency and professional development. I have published numerous articles, presented at multiple conferences, and co-authored a textbook chapter.
*Zumba® Background (ZIN™ & Zumba Jammer™)*
I have always loved dance fitness. While in graduate school, I taught step classes at the university in between classes; however, it wasn't until 2010, that I began attending Zumba® classes. I saw an immediate connection between the movements/rhythms and African Dance and I was hooked... not to mention I had a blast and smiled throughout the entire class.
One of the instructors suggested that I get licensed to teach, so in 2011, I did just that. It is a welcome change of pace to my professional career and I am grateful that it was introduced into my life. I LOVE teaching classes, LOVE the students, LOVE the music/choreograph and I, especially, LOVE the way it still puts a smile on my face. *In July 2016, I was selected as a Zumba Jammer™ and I am thrilled to represent the Zumba® Family by leading Choreo ZIN Jam™ Sessions for our fabulous ZIN™ members! I have held ZIN Jam™ sessions in various cities and across multiple states including Arkansas, Texas, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma and Alaska!
