Hello! I'm Amanda Kohn, and I live in Lexington, KY. I've been a ZIN™ Member since Oct 2016 and I absolutely love teaching Zumba. Come visit my class. I guarantee you will have a blast when you ditch the workout and join the party! Got questions? Don't hesitate to drop me a message!
In 2014, I was in a physical rut. After having my third (and last!) kid, I had very little time to take care of my health. As a result, I was overweight - heavier than ever before - and my cholesterol hit 300. I was only 31 years old. I tried a few group fitness classes at my gym, but repetitive weight lifting and drill-style HIIT programs just weren't for me.
I took my first Zumba class on a Sunday afternoon, sweat all the way through my clothes, and couldn't move the next day. But I loved it so much I took another class the following Wednesday! The music and choreo reminded me of cheerleading in high school and I stubbornly tried to keep up despite being so very out of shape. I kept going every week to at least 3 Zumba classes. My family missed me and had to piece together a few dinners on their own, but my cholesterol dropped to 204 and I had lost more than 30 pounds in less than a year. (I was also a lot less of a grumpy-pants. I'm just saying.)
After 2 years of dancing in the back corners of the room, quietly reliving my glory days as a cheerleader, choreographer and coach, I did the training to become a licensed Zumba instructor. With years of unused choreo dancing in my head, I could finally pull together my own routines, and maybe even some day share them with a class of my own. In just 3 months, I auditioned and (some how???) was offered a class at the shiny, new YMCA in town! Luck, luck, and more luck!
Today, I'm a lot healthier though I still have a long way to go with my eating habits. :) I now teach an average of 3 classes a week and love watching my students transform as I did. Whether it's mastering a new choreo, losing weight, or making friends, I feel so very lucky to get to observe those moments as they happen for my students. Zumba is indeed a fitness program, but it is also a community of some of the nicest people you'll ever meet, and a happy place for nearly anyone who tries a few classes. I hope you can find your happy place in my class, or in other classes within our Zumba Community.
Let it move you, and let it change you for the better!
