While the term “self care” may lead some to roll their eyes, it’s one of the most important habits we can form. In its most basic definition, self care is the act of preventing unwanted physical and emotional harm through intentional behavior. It can be as simple as taking a daily vitamin, or as extensive as taking a three-month sabbatical from work to get a break from the daily grind. There’s always room to do more to take care of yourself, so we compiled this list of ideas to help get you started.

Get your ZZZs. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep everyday to get the full benefits of a night of rest.

Quit being a workaholic. Although our culture may encourage working around the clock, our health can suffer from it; in fact, workaholicism (yes, it’s a thing) can actually lead to disorders including anxiety and OCD.

Invest in your physical fitness. Feeling good physically isn’t just good for your physical well-being, but does wonders for your mental health, too!

Destress, your own way. Whether it’s a warm bath, taking a walk, meditating, or dancing with friends, schedule time for yourself every day to do something that makes you feel good.

Believe in yourself. Sounds cheesy, but knowing that you’re worth a little TLC will help you to choose self care over working unnecessary overtime, missing your favorite class at the gym, or skipping meals.

The final word: There’s nothing selfish about self care – you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. And, you deserve it!
