Instructor Resources & Career
If you're an aspiring fitness instructor or still finding your footing, you want to grow your exercise class with the right people. That means identifying and targeting prospects who would be interested in your offerings.
This guide shares practical strategies to find and convert new participants, including crafting clear, consistent messaging, personalizing your outreach efforts, and creating inclusive offerings that meet people where they are. Here are four effective ways to connect with new exercise group participants, encourage sign-ups, and build a welcoming community that keeps newcomers coming back.
1. Define Your Audience
Before you start reaching out to potential class participants, you need to know who you're trying to reach. Defining and segmenting your audience is the first step. Determine your audience based on characteristics like:
· Demographics: Consider the age group you intend to market to, whether young adults, middle-aged individuals, seniors, or a mix. Are you targeting a specific gender? Statistically, women are more likely to participate in dance cardio classes than men, so that's something to factor in. Also, think about where you'll be teaching the class. Ideally, you'd want to reach prospects in and around your local area, though offering virtual classes allows you to expand your reach.
· Experience: Are you tailoring your fitness classes to beginners or more experienced participants? Consider what their fitness and personal goals might be, such as improving flexibility, strength, endurance, or coordination, losing weight, or socializing with others in a supportive, like-minded community.
· Behaviors: Based on demographics like age group and gender, think about your target audience's typical behaviors and preferences. For example, do they tend to get their news and information from social media? Would they generally prefer early-morning classes or evening sessions to accommodate their work schedules, routines, and lifestyles?
Once you're equipped with this information, you can tailor your offerings and messaging accordingly, personalizing your outreach campaign to your target audience. For example, beginners may respond best to “zero-judgment, start-here” language. Moms with busy schedules may value quick, easy booking options and flexible class times. Align your class formats, times, and instruction style to each segment's needs. You can reflect that alignment in your texts, emails, social media posts, and website for a cohesive, personalized experience.
2. Leverage Digital Tools
After defining your audience, you can use a variety of online platforms and tools to target these groups and track engagement. A few examples are:
Social Media
Social media is easily one of the best ways to promote your fitness classes and attract new participants. Share fun and engaging content through popular platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, depending on which ones your audience typically uses. For example, you might post short reels of dance routines or exercises performed in your classes, instructor tips, or testimonials from satisfied participants that could motivate others to join.

Website
Your website is another powerful marketing tool that can encourage sign-ups. Prospective participants might browse your website to get a feel for your brand and offerings, which can largely determine whether they convert successfully or walk away.
To make a strong first impression, ensure your website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Highlight your offerings in detail, such as through individual service pages for beginner and advanced classes. Include class times and schedules, positive reviews from participants, and educational resources and blog posts to establish credibility.
Email Marketing
Email marketing can be an excellent strategy for connecting with your audience. You can invite new participants to subscribe to your email newsletter, where you can regularly share content like class updates, fitness and nutrition tips, and special offers and promotions.
Use engaging visuals, strong subject lines, and clear calls to action to drive sign-ups. When someone signs up for your class, they can receive an automated confirmation email, along with an option to sign up for promotional emails. Make sure they can easily opt out of receiving emails.
Digital Tracking and Analytics Tools
These tools allow you to collect, track, and analyze data from marketing campaigns so you can see what's working and what isn't. You can monitor metrics like social media post engagement, website traffic, and conversion rates to better understand your audience's behavior. Over time, this can reveal which audience segments to prioritize, when and how to reach them, and how you can personalize your outreach efforts for optimal fitness student retention.
3. Implement a Referral Program
High-impact customer referral programs are one of the most valuable, cost-effective promotional tools at your disposal. They leverage word-of-mouth marketing to identify high-quality leads and potentially loyal customers.
You can encourage your existing satisfied customers to spread the word and reward them in return. Here are some examples:
· Free class: When a current class participant refers a friend who signs up, you can reward the referrer with a free class credit.
· Discount for both parties: When a new participant signs up via a referral, you could reward both the referrer and the referred with a discount, such as 10% off a class pack or membership.
· Branded swag giveaway: You can offer a free branded T-shirt, water bottle, or tote bag to class participants who refer a certain number of people.
· Collaborations with local businesses: Consider partnering with a local business, such as a smoothie bar or an activewear store, to promote your referral program. For example, if someone refers a friend, both individuals receive a gift card to that business. It's a win-win for everyone involved!
· Monthly referral contest: Whoever refers the most new class participants in a month wins a prize.
· Social media sharing incentives: Encourage current participants to share your class on social media and tag your business. If someone signs up for the class because of their post, give them a prize or reward. You can use custom codes or sign-up links to track these referrals.
Be sure to promote your referral program through multiple mediums, such as your website, social media platforms, and email newsletter. You can also spread the word in person, such as announcing it to the class before or after sessions.
4. Diversify Your Offerings
One of the best strategies for reaching out to new exercise group participants is to expand your offerings. The more diverse your services are, the more people you're likely to reach. Here are some ways to do so:
· Tailor your classes to various age groups and fitness levels to broaden appeal.
· Offer both in-person and virtual classes to grow your customer base.
· If possible, offer a wide variety of class times — including weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons, and evenings — to accommodate multiple schedules and lifestyles.
· Host outdoor or pop-up classes in parks and community spaces to reach new neighborhoods and audiences.
· Offer specialty sessions, such as prenatal or postpartum fitness classes, or those geared toward teen athletes or older adults.
· Provide accessible and inclusive options, such as accommodations for wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
· Host workshops or clinics, focusing on specific topics like form fundamentals, injury prevention, or recovery and mobility, to appeal to education-focused newcomers.
