Journey to Zumba is an escape from the real world
- Savannah Morning News
Through the years I've been to all kinds of YMCA classes - step
aerobics, pilates and yoga to list a few. So I pride myself in knowing
most of the lingo - around the world, cha-cha, mambo, cat stretch and
down dog. So when I went to my first Zumba class I was prepared to
listen.
However, the only thing I heard was very loud music. I immediately
planted myself in the back of the room, near the door, in case I
needed to make a quick getaway. Zumba started and I was jumping
all over the place like an idiot. During the class, I was amazed at how
all the women in front of me and beside me knew all the moves
without a single prompt from instructor Cara Peoples.

What the Heck Is Zumba? Finally, a fitness class that’s fun for even the staunchest gym-o-phobe.
- Westchester Chronicles Magazine
When my editor asked me to write an article about Zumba, an up-and-coming fitness class based on Latin and international dance moves, I begged not to have the assignment. Right in the description, I saw at least two potentials for disaster: the “fitness class” part, something I hadn’t attempted since high school P.E., and the “Latin and international dance moves” part, which I knew wouldn’t jibe with my uncoordinated limbs.
My protest fell on deaf ears, though, and Zumba enthusiasts assured me I could hack it. “At a recent Zumba demonstration, a seven-year-old girl stepped out of the crowd to join us. She was absolutely uninhibited and could follow the steps really well,” said instructor Laura Solow, who, after discovering Zumba and losing 30 pounds, was inspired to make teaching it her second career. “Now I can say that I have a seven-year-old and a seventy-six-year-old in the same Zumba class!” Great, I thought, it’ll be that much more embarrassing when I fall on my face and knock all my teeth out.
